YES, WE HAD SOME FLU CASES - AND YES, WE ARE STILL OPEN!

Fourteen Boy Scouts and an adult medic have been put in quarantine at the San Isabel Boy Scout Camp after showing flu-like symptoms earlier this week. The 14 boys were taken to a Pueblo hospital where one tested positive for Type A influenza. Health officials expect to know sometime today if he has the H1N1 swine flu variety. The boys went back to camp where an adult staff member also has begun showing flu symptoms and all 15 are in a separate area resting on cots and being cared for by more medics from Custer County who have come to the camp.

None of the cases are serious, according to Jennifer Ludwig, associate director of disease prevention and emergency preparedness at the Pueblo City-County Health Department, and the efforts by staff members to quarantine the sick individuals and disinfect the camp mean it will stay open. The 410-acre camp straddles Custer and Pueblo counties and both health departments have been working on the case, along with state health department officers who came to the camp to supervise efforts to disinfect areas.

Rene Monarez, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America, said that the parents of the 14 Texas youngsters, who came from troops in Plano and Houston, had been notified but that the boys would remain at the camp until the session ends Saturday and then head home. The camp will continue its regular operation for the remainder of the camp season.

The 2009 Outpost Program at San Isabel Scout Ranch

The SISR Outpost program is an extension of our resident program. SISR and the Rocky Mountain Range possess
resources especially suited for this program. The beauty of the mountains, rivers and forests inspire Scouts and
complement the Outpost adventure. The Outdoor Code is essential here in Colorado. Our staff is trained and
ready to teach outdoor skills, offer ideas, and model the Scout spirit you want your boys to value. The Outpost
camp runs Monday through Friday during the SISR camp week. All meals will be provided for Outpost Scouts.
Scouts will join the rest of the camp to participate in the weeks closing activities. The cost for Outpost camp is
an additional $50 per scout. Enjoy your Troops Outpost adventure with one or all of the following activities:
Mountain Biking: Leave the bustle of camp on a single track trail through the 450 acres in the
Colorado wilderness. This thrilling encounter will stretch physical abilities and enhance self-esteem as
it pushes the Scout to accomplish more than he believes he can. No need to pack your bike, we have
them ready and waiting for you.

Hiking: Altitude and awe‐inspiring views are free with this adventure. Scouts will learn what it means to
“be prepared” in the Rockies. A daypack with the essentials is required. Don’t forget your water bottle,
snack, raingear and good walking shoes.

Orienteering/GPS: Let the races begin! Join us for a day of orienteering. Orienteering is the
sport of navigation with GPS, map and compass. Have fun while learning how to use a GPS unit, as
well as, the old reliable compass. The object of the SISR orienteering course is to locate a number of
different locations throughout the day. The hard work will pay off with a reward at the end of the day.
Join us for the challenge!

Climbing: Scouts have the opportunity to climb on the great Rockies and learn the basics of rock
climbing. Then put the test what they know on the “rock”. Partial Climbing Merit Badge credit may be
earned for requirements accomplished. This activity takes place onsite.

Rafting: Launch into Wednesday morning and discover the connection between you and the river.
The Arkansas River awaits you with crisp waters and a sense of adventure. Scouts leave SISR every
Wednesday morning to raft the Arkansas with trained rafting guides. Return to SISR in time for dinner.
This activity is and additional fee of $50.00, not included in the Outpost fee. Rafting takes place at
Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base.

Shooting: Outpost membership has its privileges. Join us for an evening of shooting. Outpost
participants will enjoy an evening at the shooting range all by themselves. Practice what you’ve already
learned in camp. Challenge each other in a friendly shoot off. This activity requires a fee for
ammunition.

Good People Needed ...
Join our Staff!

San Isabel Scout Ranch is seeking Scouts, Explorers, and Leaders of all types to serve in full-time and part-time positions during this summer. SISR is a great place to work, especially for mature Scouts and Venturers who want something more Out of a "summer job" than a paycheck.

Service on the staff of SISR is challenging and rewarding. If you have an outstanding Scout or Explorer who wants to contribute to the growth of Scouts and Leaders from all parts of the country, then see contact information below.

Adults are also needed and welcome on the SISR Staff. Full time and part time positions need to be filled by quality Scouters. If you are one of these people, feel free to contact us.

The goal is to improve the camp program, service, and operation with each passing year. The only way this can be accomplished is with the active support and participation of council youth and adults. SISR staffs have been made up of excellent people from all parts of the country, and their efforts to bring a quality program to Scouts and Scouters is certainly appreciated.

However, the Council Outdoor Program is the responsibility of the local council and the people in the local council. Encourage your Scouts and Adults to consider service at SISR this coming summer!
