The Silver Beaver Award
was established in 1931 and is presented for distinguished
service to young people within a local Boy Scouts of America
Council. It is the highest award which may be presented by a
local council. A recipient must be a registered adult member of
the Boy Scouts of America. The Rocky Mountain Council salutes
the commitment and hard work of these Scouters!
2009 Silver Beaver Recipients
Though
Kay Abbott was born in Jamestown, ND, she moved often as a
result of her fathers work. She ended up in Canon City, CO where
she graduated as Valedictorian from St. Scholastica's Academy.
She attended college in
Yankton, SD where she
graduated with a degree in Accounting and minors in Math and
Business Administration. After working for the
Department of Defense Audit Agency
in Minnesota, she ended up in Canon City, CO where she opened
her own accounting business - Abbott Accounting and Tax Service.
With two children
and a older kid, her husband Mike, Kay was destined for
Scouting. She was recruited
as Pack Treasurer soon assumed the Popcorn Kernel position for
Cuerno Verde District in our council In 2002 she started helping
out with the Cub Scout Day Camp as a walking leader, then later
as the Craft Director, and then assumed position as Camp
Director. She obtained her credentials at eh National Camping
School in Philmont in 2005 and in 2008 became the first Council
Cub Scout Camping Chairman, a position she still holds. Kay is
still involved in Girls Scouts and this year she helped her
daughter sell over 750 boxes of cookies. She has been awarded
the Rocky Mountain Council Brand award, the District Award of
Merit, and the Bronze Pelican Award.
Kevin
Kelly was born and raised in Albert Lea, Minnesota. He
married his high school sweetheart in 1976. Kevin and Linda have
two children. In 1984 Kevin was transferred to Pueblo, CO. While
not a scout as a youth, Kevin grew up camping in MN with his
family which of course, gave him a lot of experience with winter
camping.
Kevin got involved
in Boy Scouts when his wire drafted him to help, for just one
hour a week, with their son's WEBELOS den. He and his son
crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 19 where he would soon become
the Scoutmaster for Troop 19. As Troop 19's leader, he has
helped 23 young men earn their Eagle Scout rank. Kevin attended
Woodbadge and has served on staff. He has the Scoutmaster Award
of Merit and has been recognized as Scoutmaster of the year for
his district twice. He is the Scoutmaster for the Rocky Mountain
Council Jamboree Troop and a brotherhood member of the
Order of the Arrow.
Born
in Del Norte Colorado, Doug Steward moved to Sterling Colorado
where he attended Sterling High School. Doug has always believed
in the need for education. He received is AA degree from
Northeastern Junior College which he attended on a basketball
scholarship. At Adams State College, Doug received his BA and
his Masters degrees. He has taught at Weld Central High School
and currently teaches sciences in all four grades at Monte Vista
High School. In addition to teaching, Doug has served as a coach
in track, football, and basketball. He has many hobbies. One is
his participation in the Living History Association where he
portrays soldiers in the 4th US Cavalry from the Civil War era.
His Scouting
activities are as far reaching as his professional ones. Doug
got started in Scouting with the Cub Scouts in Monte Vista, CO
and then later moved into Troop 284.He stayed active even with
his moves to Delta and Sterling CO. He has been active in the
Order of the Arrow serving on the dance team, as Chapter
Vice-Chief, and eventually as Advisor. His move back to the
Rocky Mountain Council found opportunities for him as a
Scoutmaster, Camporee and Camporall Director, Venture Crew
Charter Representative, and District Roundtable Director. His
belief in the Scouting program is summed up with his own words,
"The scouting adventure is the best way to help young people
learn to become productive community members. The youth are able
to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually while having fun.
...youth become creative thinkers..." Doug's great service to
Scouting has been recognized with many awards including the
District Award of Merit, Scoutmaster of the Year, and te Rocky
Mountain Council Brand Award.
